Ruka expands and develops

Ruka has nearly 250 downhill skiing days every year! Ruka’s favourable location far from the ocean combined with its state-of-the-art snowmaking system facilitates the snowy season to extend from October to June.

Over the past few years, Ruka’s development into a resort has been rather dramatic. Below is information on what’s new in Ruka for this season as well as details about some large ongoing projects.

FIS slalom slope for Ruka

The new World Cup standard slalom slope that saw construction begin in the autumn will reach completion in summer 2010. The finish line area for the new competition slope is located in the skiing stadium area, so Ruka has all the facilities for a real skiing circus of activity. The new slope will start from the summit of the Ruka Fell and head towards the skiing stadium covering a distance of 680 metres and a total elevation of 180 metres.

Kalle Palander Ruka Racing School

The racing school that carries the name of World Champion Kalle Palander provides professional coaching for sports clubs and juniors, as well as competition spirited ski slope days for groups that want to learn something new in downhill skiing. According to the school’s principal, Kalle Palander, the educational atmosphere is “focussed but also fun”.

New Hotel RukaVillage opened in October

The hotel, located in the very heart of the Ruka Village, has been especially designed for active people. The parking hall located beneath the village has a direct lift connection with the hotel rooms and various ski waxing and storage facilities. The hotel is a mere stone’s throw away from the slopes or cross-country skiing trails. The next B and V stages of the hotel construction have been initiated and will be ready by the beginning of the 2010 – 2011 season.

Hotel Rukantonttu has been opened

Ruka’s newest hotel was opened on Monday 25 November 2009. Rukatonttu is located on the shores of Lake Talvijärvi, approximately 500 metres from the centre of the Ruka resort. Rukatonttu is a hotel for people who love relaxation, where sauna bathing plays a big role, in addition to good food. Some of the culinary specialities of Rukatonttu are the tasty steak meals made from Highland Cattle.

Happy Family Bowling Alley

The bowling hall opened in September and has eight lanes. In the evenings, the bowling alley also arranges glow bowling. The bowling alley perectly completes the Happy Family activity centre, the favourite facility of which is the activity centre with its variety of play areas.
